View Full Version : All known Emotes!
Luscinia

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet, so I figure I might as well try.
The following is a list of emotes, formated like so:
<emotename><(alternative names)> - <Short description> <(SOUND) tag if there is some sound associated)>
Few notes:
almost all emotes end in a stance, I kind of generalize the stance at the end of the description in most cases
Some emotes have repeating animations(jumpingjacks, dance, boombox, burp, a lot of 'em), your characters height, and maybe build too(haven't tested it) determines how FAST the animation is after the first loop. The taller you are, the slower you move, and the shorter you are, the faster you move. This is actually true for all repeating movements, like running, most obviously.
All emotes can be accessed using their name after the emote command(/e /em /emote /me). IE: /e salute
If I missed anything, feel free to append to the list. Likewise if I typod one of the emote names, feel free to correct me!
The descriptions are my best attempt at dark-thirty in the morning when I'm tired and sleep deprived, please forgive me. :D
Lastly, if you are a dev, feel free to sticky this post. I hope it remains purely informational!
Now then, the list:
NEW(As of content update 1, as described while on Test server on 6/16 at 4:24 AM PST):
nod - Fists on hips, nod affirmatively, hold stance
welcome - Open arms welcomely, fists on hips stance
score1 to score10 - Holds a black on white scorecard up, ranging from 1-10 as specified, holds stance
angry - Fists on hips and slouches forward, as if glaring or grumbling, holds stance
frustrated - Raises both fists and leans backwards, shaking fists and head, leads into a quick-breathing angry-looking stance
drat - Raises fists up, then down, stomping at the same time, same ending stance as frustrated
shucks - Swings fist and head dejectedly, neutral forward facing stance(not the default stance, same as huh/shrug)
grief - Falls to knees, hands on forhead, looks up and gestures a sort of "why me?" look with hands, goes into a sort of depressed slump while on knees, holds stance
victory - Raises hands excitedly, and then again less excitedly, and then a third time almost non-chalantly, falls into neutral forward facing stance
winner - Fist in fist cheer, right, and then left, neutral forward facing stance, but apparently holding thier breath

thewave - Does the wave(I assume you know what this is...), neutral facing forward stance

boombox - Summons forth a boombox(it just appears) and leans over to turn it on, stands up and does a sort of dance(boombox plays music(several different, short songs)) (SOUND)
dance - randomly does one of a few dances, for the sake of my sanity, I won't bother trying to describe them.
yourewelcome - bows head and gestures with hand, neutral forward facing stance
thanks(thankyou) - gestures with hand, neutral forward facing stance **NOTE** current build on live will do bow for thanks(thankyou doesn't exist yet)

Good news, most, if not all (can't remember) of those listed above in the top half are being added to the in-game list that you can click on with the new update currently on the test server.

Yes, they all are in the list. Some of them aren't very obvious(Thank you and You're welcome) but the rest are pretty easy to spot.
There may be new ones that aren't in the list, and if anyone finds them, post 'em!

And it's nice to know the text command, for adding it to binds. For instance, one of my characters uses: /bind F10 "local Insert your battlecry of any length here!$$e tarzan"
That lets me say my battlecry in local channel (no matter what channel I'm in, usually supergroup), and he beats his chest while battlecrying.

I use the 3 of these in a bind /bind n "newspaper$$afk Sultry Single Super Hero Seeks Same" or some other such silly message.

I think its great that you went through the trouble of making this thread, i dont really play the test sever, but icant wait to try some of them, i still think this game is missing some key emotes, such as the most basic one, "SIT", and no i do not consider "YOGA" to be the same as sit. To me sit is supposed to be a cofortable position you take on the floor to relax, and i dont know if you ever tried it, but yoga is not for everyone :p

I don't recall EXACTLY how this is done, but it only works with ATs who have weapons, and might only work on some of them.

The new 'kneel' emote looks like the meditation stance used in Star Wars Galaxies (excepting that time that they somehow broke their animations, such a lovely game).
The bow-and-arrow thing only works if you have a weapon, or a weapon-summoning power like Stone Hammer. You pull the weapon out/summon it, then type ;bow. Or sometimes it works if you ;bow twice. My katana scrapper looks like he's stabbing himself when the first ;bow when he's got his sword in hand. :p

I can describe them. :)
One of them is basically the Rockaway with a different hand position (balled into fists in front of you instead of crossed arms or hands at your sides). One is kind of a headbanger at a concert dance. One is The Humpty Dance. One is Rerun's dance (from the old TV series 'What's Happening'). The last one (that I've seen, at least) I can only describe as "The Dance of the Rhythm-less (or the Rhythmicly challenged, if you prefer)". The one where you have your fists balled up near your ears and you're basically just swaying from side to side. :p

You can still get the bow and arrow animation by using the fancybow emote while any weapon is visible.
Question: In the quick menu, under combat, is an entry titled Come Get Some! It features a taunt that continues after the initial critter beckoning with your character punching his/her fist into his/her palm.
I tried taunt, taunt1, and taunt2, and none of them feature the fist into palm animation.
It sounds like taunt1 used to, but apparently it was changed...Does anyone know the new emote to get this animation playing?

Hiyas Pips! Love the Hero Planner. :D
I literally JUST tested it on Virtue with a female character, she pounds her palm for hours using taunt1.
BTW, animations will break if you're in a combat stance when you try to execute them.

I don't think so, but you can open the emote menu with the apostrophe (') key. From there you can type the letters that are highlighted in the list to choose the category and emote you wish to perform. With a little practice, you can spout off animations as needed!
If you don't like the default key you can always bind it to a different one. The command is called "quickchat." Here's an example of binding quckchat to a key: /bind p "quickchat"

I got the Bow and Arrow pose with my assault rifle blaster, but it doesn't replace the weapon - instead, she holds her gun way out in front of her and does a drawing-back motion with her other hand - makes for a nifty screenshot.
The taunt animation depends on the character, it seems. My friends all do the fist-into-palm motion, but my mace tanker draws his mace and tosses it back and forth between his hands. It looks really cool. I haven't had the chance to try it, but he might do that even if I try the taunt emotes. Your character might also have a special taunt because of his/her weapon.

Just a bit of interesting iinformation for anyone wondering:
As it has been stated, the /e warmup can also be /e kata. A "kata" is an imaginary fight between the person performing the kata and several imaginary opponents. Puts a new meaning to what your character does when you type it when thought about that way.
Awesome list by the way!
HooliganTX
08-08-2004, 07:48 PM
I've seen some katas that work that way. I've also seen some that were very stylized, and would probably not work well if done in a fight, but still required some skill to perform.
A kata is an exercise routine (or a 'warmup') that is particular to a certain skill level in a certain martial art. At the higher levels, it becomes unique to the martial artist, as well. While it could be useful as image training, similar to shadow boxing, the primary purpose is more of a general workout, improvement of motor skills, and to identify and demonstrate your skill level.
The easiest source I can think of to see some weird ones would be to look at the 'Weapon Practice' videos in Soul Caliber 2, where you can unlock each character doing a kata. Mitsurugi, Taki, Sung Mina and the new Hwang clone all do some fairly traditional stuff, while everyone else has something to suit their style.
BTW, what we do in CoH looks more like a beginner's Tai Chi workout, which is also a kata, but a very weak one.

I think that might not be true. I bound bow to a key for my katana scrapper, and a lot of the time she whould do a 'bau' (phonetic) with her sword piercing her torso. I think it happens when you have an enemy selected, when it becomes 'boh' as in bow and arrow. I thought it was random before, but it would happen 3 times in a row one time when I wanted to do the 'bau'.( Bow dammit!) It would be cool if the emotes were contextual.

I wish they'd do a crouch emote. You know,
/em crouch
Kinda like you're waiting for some poor loo-hoo-za-herr to get dumb enough to stumble across your path. Coiled, ready to spring. (Picture Batman crouching on a gargoyle, or Spidey on top of a building. THAT kind of crouch.)
When I have to go AFK for a few, I'd like to perch my character on a building corner and crouch. Sit just doesn't look real good.

As already gone into, some people with drawn weapons can sometimes do a bow-and-arrow pose by using the fancybow emote.
I do not know how, when or why this happens, but it used to work with the bow emote and from what I've heard no longer does.

Really? I'll have to go back and test your theory, I think it has to do with having an enemy targeted, even just the unconsious body, kind of like how you go into the combat stance instead of akimbo when there are enemies around. I still have the character with the katana.

You have to have the weapon in hand, even just hitting an attack that has a weapon when you aren't targeting anything, or the target is out of range will draw your weapon. Great for reducing the animation time of that first attack.
Having the crouch emote would be cool, I have the same idea for an afk bind. Having the rest kneel work as an emote would be nice too. Great for the ninja style 'bow', too bad there are no ninjas in CoH tho, oh wait . . .

My friend and I have discovered this by accident: if you activate Ice Sword or Fire Sword, so that the weapon appears in your hand, then the "fancybow" emote will cause you to pantomime shooting a bow-and-arrow, instead of the usual expression of politeness. I am guessing it's an easter egg.

I saw the Vamps in Striga doing This (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/matthew.barr1/superhero/nightcrawler.jpg)
They were sitting on a hill in a circle. 3 of them were in the arms crossed as if in a coffin and the others were doing that crouch. so the animation and art is in there in some form as of issue 3. If I can get a screenshot up Ill try and post it later.

I am not sure exactly when it changed, but you used to only be able to do a couple of emotes while flying, but now they all work. Some look quite odd as you change to a standing stance in mid-air.

The truth about the hidden bow and arrow emote...
First off you MUST be using a toon that holds any kind of weapon... i.e. summoned like fire/ice sword or solid like broadsword/axe
Second activate any power that puts you into a fighting stance with your weapon drawn... you do NOT have to have anything targeted
Finally use the BOW not fancybow emote before your toon relaxes with the weapon drawn.
If done with the proper timing your toon will use your unsheathed weapon to mimic the firing of an arrow.
When the timing is off and the emote is done too late then you will end up impaling yourself with your weapon depending on the type of weapon you have.
Hope this clears a few things up and makes everyone laugh as they impale themselves. :D

There's a (likely temporary, likely a bug) emote by the name of "paladinawaken"
Now what this does is buggy. If you don't have hover/fly going, you'll get a rumble sound and look like you're about to cast Nova(minus Nova glowies) - then your character will disappear(glowies will remain).
However, if you do have hover/fly going, you will do the full Nova hover animation(minus glowies) without disappearing. However, you won't get the rumbling sound.
Note: I say Nova animation but I've never really paid any attention to the actual Nova animation, so it might just be something unique or the animation of another power.

A group of mid-level heroes that stand under Atlas on the Guardian server do this a lot. They do it in combination with the dance emotes and hop up and down. It looks like they are breakdancing. Very funny. Everyone that asks them how they do it gets shot down. It's a status thing I guess. If everyone starts doing it...they won't be special. No disrespect to them. They know who they are...and I won't name any names.

The leaning sit apparently just has the character model get up from that position after a fraction of a second pause within it. So just in case anyone thought you could sit down and rest like that- it's not so. I haven't asked them how to do it, either. There are a few elitist groups that hide things like that and I tend not to try and get involved with any one of them.

Here's a fun trick with hover/fly and the boombox emote:
If you trigger the boombox while just a few feet off the ground, then turn off hover during the animation, you'll drop to the ground and begin dancing while the boombox floats in midair. With careful positioning, you can place a boombox on another character's shoulder.

Emotes sometimes are greatly ignored, dust them off and use them!
Tried the 'emoting firing a bow'...as a FF/Eng defender, I have no weapon...but have the Crey Pistol..works for that as well, heh.
Fire it when not targetting a mob, do the 'fancybow' emote...yep, when timed right, I was 'plucking a bow'.

Yeah, this is a bit of a goofy one really. It's not an emote, but a bind. (srry if this has already been answered, I didn't read through everything)
/bind o "e sit$$ e dance"
Now as long as you pound the "o" key, you'll stay seated this way. As soon as you let up you'll stand again. It's really just the sit emote getting immediately interupted.
Too bad, cause it'd be a neat new sit emote if you didn't have to pound that darn key. :)

That would be a temp power gained from killing snow men (Winter Lord, or WL, and his minions) during the Winter Event.
And I tried out my katana scrapper last night, and it is fancybow with weapon drawn. But its seems to be about a 50% chance to do the firing bow animation or the actually coutly bow. It DID 100% definately do it for the "bow" emote in the past! I had it bound! I swear! I'm not crazy!!! Ha...get used to it you do. In Aikido, you get to learn new adventures in pain when you not only sit seiza for long periods of time, but also eventually move on to suwari waza, techniques used from the kneeling position. To do this, you actually learn a technique called shikko where you walk in a kneeling position.
Watch any samurai movie with action indoors and you'll see lots of it...drawing the sword while kneeling..moving quickly.
My toes would sometimes ache for days after long nights of shikko based techniques. But then again, I could actually get to an opponent 15 feet away in about 3 seconds without leaving my knees....lol

Certain emotes will change slightly if you do them more than one time consecutively. For instance, ;ledgesit, first time you type it, will usually have you sit with legs dangling down, arms at your sides, palms flat. Second time, your arms will be across your legs with your hands in your lap, head hanging slightly.
First ;surrender will usually be arms up, standing. Second will be hands up, kneeling.
;walllean done multiple times will change from legs out straight, hands in pockets to legs crossed, arms crossed over chest
;protest done multiple times will change the sign you hold. It seems that you have to move or jump to take yourself out of the emote and then do it again for the change to take effect.
Anyway, there might be more of them that change with multiple executions, but these are the ones I know of off the top of my head.

Or Mantid could be helpful.
How dare he. :D
^Check his sig, (most of) the animations for the emotes are in there.
Kudos!
*Edit:*
*Koff* By sig I mean the link. I swore I saw a sig up there not a few seconds ago.

Oops... first time I've accidently killed my sig!
Umm.. am I missing any animations?
Luscinia

Only on those that have multiple animations(Dance, ledgesit(male/huge/granite armor), walllean) - but they get the general idea, which is the point!
I'm just being picky.
Mantid

Oh, right. Those I have randomized... so they get a random one when they click it.
Now I am missin the specific Boom Box song emote commands...
Haven't heard any complaints about it yet though! :D

Bah! You're too clever for Lusci!
As a note:
The ;none emote used to set you to your normal standing emote cycle(look around, cross arms, look around, whatnot) - currently it -smoothly- sets you to looking straight ahead, fists on your sides stance. I think this changed around I6.
And by smoothly I mean you don't just skip into the animation. But it does look kinda funky using it from sitting emotes.

Hrm... wonder why. :D
*Edit:*
Oh yeah, and if they want those, they can find them

me thinks Mantid needs someone else to worship aside from Miss Kitty. He seem to have too much time on his hands.

I need some help deciding which direction to go here.
The options are pretty simple: Continue updating this post or make a new one.
The only real pro with keeping this post that I can think of is all the tidbits other people have added from here to there.
Thoughts?

I second the wiki. Make a new post that simply points to it. I direct new players to it all the time.

Good idea with the wiki, but I have my own idea on how to categorize emotes. And there's the occasional person that doesn't like visiting third party sites for whatever reason. Thinking a new post, definitely.
