This post started elsewhere (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=300311&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1&vc=1), and the content was too good to leave unorganized. So I gathered it, sorted it, and am presenting it here for your enjoyment. (This is all your work, anyway!)

Red, Blue and Green can also refer to the con of an encountered mob, infact I've never encountered anyone using it to talk about inspirations.

PP is also used when talking about power pools, this is rare however.

Main, the character most commonly played by a player. Almost always the highest level character on an account but some people max a character and then stow them away to play another aka Switching Main.

BF - boyfriend.

CF is another name for Crey's Folly.

I don't know how common it is, but a few of us (especially those who used to/currently play Champions as well), tend to refer to Tanks as "Bricks". You may want to throw that it, also.

- greys, greens, blues, whites, yellows, oranges, reds and purples.. collective names for mobs that con in that particular color.

ie. "let's go hunt some reds, these yellows arent good enough xp"

- PP = can be either Prometheus Park or Perez Park (usually the latter)

- Mez ( mesmerizing ) using a power that stops the enemies in place but they are freed as soon as they are hit by an attack

- Stun, immobilizes enemies, they stay immobile even while being beaten up.

- Root, immobilizes enemies but they are able to fight back

- Snare, reduces enemy movement but doesn't root, otherwise the same.

Its a reference to the classic movie The Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi which is set in Illinois (because of the Chicago brand of blues music the band plays). In the movie they are stuck in traffic because a group of Nazis are demonstrating and holding up traffic. The classic line from the movie... "Illinois Nazis. I hate Illinois Nazis".

I hear a lot of people talking (mostly in context of PvP discussions) about nerfing or powers being nerfed. I get the impression that this means that they've been powered down somehow, maybe to try to even the playing field. I think it might be a good thing to add to this list.

Can you grab some stuff from this FAQ:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=faq&Number=301422&fpart=1& PHPSESSID=

Btw, "assist" has a more specific denotation: not just killing the same mob as someone else, but actually targeting your friend and firing. Technically, you don't even know who you are shooting.

This matters greatly. If the puller says "I'm pulling, please assist" and you think "Okay, I will shoot someone, too" that's a big problem.

Yes, nerfing is the process of taking a formally overpowered (or easily explotible) part of the game and weakening so much that it becomes almost useless (or at least, useless in the eyes of the people who used to use it).

Magnitude or MAG -

The power of a hold or other control power.

A typical hold has magnitude 3 hold power, but you can sometimes get a critical hit of MAG 4. If you do, it will hold a boss with 1 hold. Bosses need a combined hold of 4 or more mag to be held, which is why 1 doesn't usually do it but two always do (if they both hit of course).

I usually see PP referring to Paragon Protectors (PP in there).

Con: v. Determine (consider) the game's reported difficulty of an enemy (Let me con those guys... looks like yellows).
n. The difficulty the game has reported for an enemy (group of blue cons over there)

pills: Inspirations (got any purple pills?)

AV: Arch Villian.

CF: Crey's Folley

PI: Peregrine Island

Portal: A passage that can be used by enemies or players that either summons more enemies, or allows players to pass to another zone or mission

Inf: Influence

Nuke: A type of attack that does devestating AoE damage, but drains the player of all endurance when used

KS: Killsteal

Spam: 1) to use a click power rapidly and continuously (spamming holds).
2) excessive chatter, especially on broadcast or request channels.

wipeout: When an entire team of players is defeated.

YW: You're Welcome

blapper: A blaster that spends more time than the average blaster within melee range of mobs.

troll: A poster or player who attempts to incite others into arguing about some subject.

troller: A controller

WoW: World of Warcraft

Log: logoff from the server (gotta log, see ya tomorrow)

And there's a zillion ones for powers, but that would almost need a seperate thread.

What about the word "con" as in "a mob 'cons' blue to me"
I understand the reference, but what is 'con' short for? Or is it not an abbreviation at all?

Screwloose
01-11-2005, 09:52 PM
Con is shortened from Consider, which was a term used in a lot of text muds for the process of working out how tough a mob was in relation to your character.

This often wasn't an automatic process, but a skill that you had to use on each mob and not always possessed by all character classes.

Fantastic post.. thank you very much... now if someone could just tell me what "six slotting" a power means... I think I know... but I hate to assume

Romani
01-31-2005, 08:15 PM
Oftentimes I see the phrase min/max, and to be honest with you, I still don't know what it means (specifically) or where it came from.

Perhaps that could be added?

Screwloose
01-31-2005, 08:27 PM
six slotting means ... putting 6 slots into a power. Basically since 6 slots is the most you can put in a power it means putting as much Enhancement into a power as you can.

You will want to do this with powers that you find particularly effective for your playstyle.

Powergamers use it as a short hand which roughly translates as "this power is the uberest".

Min / Max is the philosophy of Minimum investment for Maximum gain.

Basically it assumes that all abilities have some sort of break even point at which they produce the maximum effect for the investment made to get there and above which you get less return for your investment.

For individual powers this is not hard to work out, but sometimes combinations of powers give additional effects by synergy and start to generate enormous mathematical proofs that doing thing in X fashion produces 2% more efficiency that doing it Y way.

People who need to know that their character is absolutely as powerful as it is possible to be often get involved in this sort of shenanigans.

regards, Screwloose.

Being new to the game Ive found this post/guide very useful so thank you to all who have helped. I do have one question, what is H/O (HO)? I assume it's similar to S/O (SO) or D/O (DO)s.

[/ QUOTE ]

Since no one has answered this yet I'll give it a shot. Maybe wrong but someone can post the corrections if I am.

It's a Hamidon enhancement. sometimes called a Hammi-o. You get them from random drops in Hamidon battle. I understand they give a bigger boost to powers and usually (always?) work on two aspects like damage and accuracy. So they are more effective per slot. I haven't done any Hamidon Raids yet. My highest is only 26th level kin nrg defender. Maybe I'll put aside my alt-itis and level one up to experience a raid first hand.

farm - High level char power leveling lower level char

[/ QUOTE ]
'Farm' - Actually this means repeating a particular portion of a mission or process to horde its rewards BUT NOT completing it to its entirety. An example would be the Sewer Trial. Though now corrected, a team could take on the Sewer Trial and arrest only the Kraken. At the time, Kraken were avg 60k-70k a pop. Once all the Kraken were arrested the team would exit and fail the trial on purpose only to respawn it again and repeat the process.

Though not always negative, 'farming' could also mean a state of play. " I need to spend tonite farming influence so I can make that costume change I have been aching to do."

New to CoH, love it btw.... good write up on the acronyms.

However I have a correction, its a historical lesson to some as it is not so well known anymore.

w00t – Cool
woot – Cool

Either w00t is actually an acronym for "We Own (the) Other Team". Earliest representation I recall was during some 2am.com games back in the mid to late 90's.
It represents winners or super accomplishments in gaming.

Also represented by its stick figure form \o/ (a little man with arms raised in victory.

I would also like to add \o or lo, which both are double edged. 1 correct asumption is a little man waving to you as a greeting, another correct way is to see it as the letter "L" and "O" which combined quickly say "Hello".

Informative for some perhaps... game one :) \o_

Good Thread -- a few more I've seen...

anchor - a mob that is debuffed (usually by Defenders) which also affects
other nearby mobs and lasts till cancelled, caster runs out of end, or a
n00b kills it - usually, really irritating your Defender... :)

camp - hanging around a specific spot waiting for a particular mob spawn ie.
'Let's camp Royal Refinery for the Paladin'.

dc'd - disconnected
Dirt Nap - a player who got killed by a mob
Dwarf - one of the forms a Kheldian can use.

faces - Banished Pantheon Spirit Masks (they're a badge) ie. 'Let's go
kill some faces at the DA gate'

gtg - Got to Go (no question)
gd2g - Good to Go

herd - tactic used to gather large groups of villains for nukes.

Kheld - a Kheldian AT (Peacebringer or Warshade)

Lobster - slang for Dwarf (sometimes you'll see Crab instead).

Mort - A Vahzilok Mortificator

Ock, Octo - Lusca the (monster) Octopus in IP

pl - Power Level
pl'r - a player who power levels

squid - another Kheldian form, or slang for the AT in general
squishy - a player with very weak defense - ie. 'Don't let anyone melee
our Blaster -- he's squishy'
SWC - Skyway City

tank - The archtype, or as a verb 'to obtain mob aggro, and/or herd mobs"

And last, one of my own ;)

biff - to de-buff a mob (the opposite of buffing a hero). ie. 'I'll biff
the Mort, you guys hit the Eidolan - kill the Mort anchor last' :)

Regards,
4

I don't know if this has been answered (too lazy too look all through the thread) but "Illinois Nazis" was used in the film The Blues Brothers (a group of Nazis were chasing them) The 5th Collumn are Naziesque, hence the comparison

w00t is usually used in CoH to mean "awesome" or sweet.

like "w00t! i got a badge!" would be sweet! i got... not cool! i got!
it isn't merely interesting, it makes you full of joy.

The Origins of W00t are disputed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woot) The farthest back sighting I can remember of it was back in the BBS days, early 90's or even slightly earlier, as an early 1337 way of expressing "ROOT!" i.e., "I have achieved ROOT access to a Linux box, thus proving my leet hacker skillz."

Either definition's equally amusing, but the actual origin of the term has never been proven or verified.

For the longest time I thought it was an onomatopoetic term describing the sound of the bells that go off on a game show (i.e., The Price Is Right) when someone wins $10,000 on the Big Wheel.

I believe "bio break" or bio brk means not only for going to the rest room but for anything related to human body, also refers to as biological break. It can mean you need to drinkl or get some food or whatever it means. Some people thought that it means to write something on the "bio"section of the ID.

One I've seen in several games

IONO = I don't know. Try saying it like a teenager i.e. unable to pronounce consonents (he he he).

On a related note, one of my pet hates is "z" for "s". I can understand "pls" for "please", especially in the heat of battle, but I hate "plz". One of the posters at the WOW board obviously hates it as well since their signature is 'if anyone asks for something from me and uses "plz" because it is shorter than "please" then I answer "no" because it is shorter than "yes".'

Cheers

Also, I didn't notice "nrg" on the list or the pages I got through. This one boggled my mind but it means "energy" as in Energy Manipulation type powers.

I agree with this sentiment:

Nope, sorry..99% of people i've seen in game use

SC: Steel Canyon
Sky : Skyway City

[/ QUOTE ]

SC has always been Steel Canyon.

Possible additions:
RA - Recovery Aura, a short term buff for those nearby the player casting it which increases the speed of your endurance recovery.
Regen - Regeneration Scrapper or Regeneration Aura; the aura is like the RA aura only it recovers your green bar instead your blue bar.
OMGLFG1009!!1JPOUIOSJEGZZIE!!! - people who like to exaggerate the popular "OMG" may go a little insane and just add a bunch of characters; they are especially fond of the "!"; also used by those making fun of such people.
Gank - (I learned this the hard way) - term refers to being in a PvP zone where one character gets trounced by others; one tactic is for an opponent to use a combo of invisibility to sneak up - stun/mez - nuke; another is for one player to engage the opponent then have a large group of teammates join in and pound the player to a pulp within 1 or 2 seconds. This often happens repeatedly as the "gankers" will wait by the hospital or gate for player to return.

In my opinion, invisibilty/sneaking and teawork are part of the game.

GANKing specifically refers to the camping out around gates, hospitals, respawns, etc for the purpose of repeatedly killing the same opponent. Usually done for the purpose of stroking an unstable or weak ego.
